This is the most ambitious and accomplished piece that I have seen by Trois Riviere, Quebec artist Leonard Croteau. We also have a crow and elephant made by him in our folk art carving section. Mr. Croteau, as far as I know is alive, but no longer carving. He is not listed in any of the folk art books that I have encountered, but I have had at least a dozen pieces by this artist over the years. This piece was made c1990. I know because I picked it, and sold it back then. I was happy to see him again. He has a great presence, and appropriately thin legs. This along with his super large head, and the surface work which suggests the "hairiness" of the beast make this a very strong piece. 42" long, 14" wide, 50" tall. Great condition.
